Today, I would also talk about artists featured at Pioneering, an exhibition that pays tribute to the Chinese studying art in France in the early 20th century.
Like I said in last week's posting, it took about a month to travel from China to France by boat at the time.
One could imagine the discomforts passengers had to endure during such a long voyage.

Among those Chinese students aboard the liner, there were few women who anticipated a fruitful stay in Paris.
They came from different backgrounds, but shared a dream to be a career artist.

Those brave women believed that their future should not be confined to heavy household duties and rigid social conventions, and that learning art would invigorate them, making their life much more diverse and meaningful than that of their mothers.

At the art schools in Paris, they worked as hard as their male classmates.
They became achieved artists and educators; their experiences inspired more women to take up art.

Some of them are familiar to you, for example, Pan Yuliang. Her dramatic rise from an ex-prostitute to a legendary painter has been adapted into movies and TV series.

There is Xiao Shufang whose love story with Wu Zuoren, also a great artist returning from France, was featured in a previous posting.

Also there are long-forgotten names which are being brought back to our vision at this exhibition.
Tang Yunyu was once referred to, together with Pan Yuliang, as two top women painters of the time.

Liu Ziming lost hearing at an early age. Her paintings entered the time-honored official Paris Salon exhibition for several times.

A minority of their generation, these talented women diversified the scene of modern Chinese art.
Also, they were the pioneers of a course in which women endeavored to gain freedom and independence.

I can't help to recall a scene from The Iron Lady of 2011.
Young Margaret, after losing in an election, accepted Denis' marriage proposal, and she said,
"I will never be one of those women who stays silent and pretty on the arm of her husband, or remote and alone in the kitchen doing the washing up for that matter.
"One's life must matter, beyond all the cooking and the cleaning and the children, one's life must mean more than that."
